Installing Wire Shelving On Your Own? Keep These 3 Things In Mind

Wall mounted wire shelving systems are a great way to renovate a closet, and you can install them on your own. However, the installation can seem complicated if you've never done it before. Here are 3 things to keep in mind before you proceed.

Mounting The Hanging Track

Most wire shelving systems work by installing a hanging track at the top of the wall. This allows the vertical tracks to securely hang from it, which is why the hang track needs support. If possible, you'll want to install the hang track into wall studs so that it has the most strength possible to hold up the shelves.

If there are no studs in the wall, you can still secure a hanging track to a wall. It will just require wall anchors to hold it in place. Wall anchors collapse to fit through pre-drilled holes, and then expand on the other side. They grip to the wall so that the screws will not pull out from the wall. The anchors will say how much weight they support, so make sure you install enough to cover the weight of the items you plan on placing on the shelves.

Space The Vertical Tracks Properly

Another mistake that can be made is just installing two vertical tracks onto the hang track, on both the far left and right of the wall. The more vertical tracks you install will help the shelving unit support more weight. The farthest away these vertical tracks can be is 2 feet, but you can always add more vertical tracks that are closer together. Keep in mind that this will increase the cost of your wire shelving system, since you need to have the vertical tracks and the brackets to support the shelves.

Don't Forget Accessories

Wire shelving is incredibly customizable. It gives you the opportunity to design a closet exactly how you want it. Do not limit yourself to just using plain shelves, since there are plenty of accessories that you can add to the shelving system.

For example, you can add pull out drawers to store loose items that would have difficulties stacking on a shelf on its own. You can also add a shoe rack to the bottom shelf that efficiently uses the space for shoe storage.

If you do not feel confident with installing a wire shelving system on your own, know that there are professionals that can help install the shelves for you.
